Minister for Health and Family Welfare U.T. Khader said on Thursday that the government will set up polyclinics in Ullal and Mangalore. Speaking at a press meet, he said each polyclinic will cater to the needs of 60,000 people.
The polyclinics will have specialists, paediatricians, obstetrician-gynaecologists and physicians in addition to providing diagnostic services. “We want to be a model for India, it should be a model for the State and country,” he said.
The Ullal polyclinic will be set up with an amount of Rs. 8.67 crore and the Mangalore polyclinic will be set up with an amount of Rs. 20 crore. A team from Bangalore is engaged in “mapping” the city for a suitable location for the polyclinic. Mangalore is to be yet mapped. If possible, it will be set up at existing urban facilities in Mangalore. Otherwise, an area in Vamanjoor has been identified. Ullal was mapped on Thursday, which is “a step forward”, he said.
Multi-speciality facilities will be made available at the centres, which will be accessible to all segments of people. They will be the link between the primary health centre (PHC) and the district hospital. The polyclinics are being set up in Mangalore as the region requires secondary care, unlike other regions of the State that require primary healthcare. Mr. Khader said the polyclinic will be “financed, managed and monitored by the National Rural Health Mission”.
