Man dies in police station

A resident of Kavoor died following chest pain while he was at Bajpe Police Station. A judicial magistrate is inquiring the cause of death.

According to Bajpe police, Melwin John, 39, was among the four persons found drinking alcohol near Malavoor vented dam on Sunday night. The police informed a relative of one of the four persons and brought all of them in for an inquiry. Melwin developed chest pain and collapsed at 11.20 p.m. He was shifted to a hospital near Kuntikana Junction where he was declared dead.

A case of unnatural death was registered following a complaint by his brother, who, reportedly said that he had a heart problem.

M. Chandra Sekhar, Police Commissioner, said as John died while he was in police custody a judicial magistrate will be inquiring into the cause of death under Section 176 of the Criminal Procedure Code. An independent inquiry will be conducted by Deputy Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) K. Shantaraju to ascertain if there were any lapses.
