The sea walkway at Malpe is now not just a spot where people come to see the rivulet joining the sea and enjoy the vast expanse of the sea, some also come here for angling.

Local people and others come here and sit on the benches laid out the sea walkway and carry out angling. Some anglers sit on the rocks below the walkway structure for the purpose. The sea walkway is located near the Malpe Tourist Jetty here.

Seeing the number of people coming to the spot, the private agency in-charge of development of Malpe beach, has decided to start an anglers club or association.

“We are planning to launch the angling association in October. We will also set up a stall near the walkway where those interested in angling can get fishing rods and lines on rent. The stall will start operating in October,” said Sudesh Shetty, head of the private agency.

Training too would be provided to those interested in angling once the stall and association start functioning.

“Those interested would be trained in using the fishing rod and how to handle a big catch. Angling requires a lot of patience. The association could teach angling to students also,” he said.

Once an association is formed, it would be possible to hold competitions in angling. Tourists and locals are visiting the sea walkway at Malpe despite the monsoon. So too are anglers.

Nearly 150 persons come for angling at the sea walkway daily. But the figure varies from day to day. At times, the number of anglers is more and others, it is few. “During the monsoon, there is a churning in the sea and anglers can catch fish. But only experienced anglers should indulge in it during the monsoon and not amateurs,” Mr. Shetty said.
