The police have arrested 38 people for their involvement in the group clash at Kalladka in Bantwal taluk on Saturday night.

On the sidelines of the monthly meeting to address the grievances of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes in his office on Sunday, Abhishek Goyal, Superintendent of Police, Dakshina Kannada, told presspersons that 24 Muslim boys and 14 Hindu boys had been arrested on the night of Saturday. The arrested have been remanded in judicial custody for 15 days, he said. “Because there was no space in the Mangalore Jail, we have sent some of the arrested to Udupi and Madikeri jails,” Mr. Goyal added.

The clash began, Mr. Goyal said, after a mini commercial vehicle driven by a Muslim youth and a motorcycle which two Hindu youths were riding collided on National Highway 48 near Kalladka.

“The groups started arguing, and some members of the group noticed that the truck was transporting five cattle in it. Slowly, more people from both the communities gathered and started beating each other and throwing soda bottles,” said Mr. Goyal.

Three persons were injured , he said. Mr. Goyal said it could not be verified whether the transportation of the cow, from Uppinangady towards the city, was illegal as the relevant documents had not been found in the vehicle.

However, three cases had been filed.
