Dinakar Babu, ZP president, said on Thursday that the increasing population will have a detrimental impact on the environment.

He was speaking at the ‘World Population Day’ function organised by the district administration, the zilla panchayat, and other organisations at the Dr. G. Shankar Government First Grade College and PG Centre, here.

Mr. Babu said that more houses are being constructed to accommodate the increasing population.

This required cutting of a large number of trees. This impacted the environment. India had a large population of the youth. It was necessary to use this demographic dividend for the progress of the country, he said.

Sheela K. Shetty, ZP vice-president, said that it was necessary to carry out more awareness programmes on the negative consequences of high growth of population among the people. Increasing population meant that the government facilities were sparsely spread, she said.

M.G. Rama, District Health and Family Welfare Officer, said that India had the second largest population in the world. Increasing population put a premium on space. There were 400 persons per square kilometre in the country, he added.
