Minister for Health and Family Welfare U.T. Khader said here on Monday that gram panchayats had the power to close down chicken stalls in their jurisdiction if the stall owners did not dispose of waste properly.

He made this remark at a health awareness programme for panchayat members in Dakshina Kannada when zilla panchayat president Asha Timmappa Gowda spoke about the difficulties being faced by panchayats in disposing of solid waste in their areas. Mangaluru South MLA J.R. Lobo said panchayat institutions and urban local bodies needed services of medical officers to take action against stalls, hotels and other establishments who did not dispose of waste in a proper way.Admitting that openly throwing chicken waste in the jurisdiction of gram panchayats was a mater of concern, Mr. Khader said, “As you have powers to issue licence, you do have power to cancel it. Make use of it.”

The Minister said except threemedical officers have been posted in all other primary health centres in Dakshina Kannada.
