According to the Bantwal Traffic police, 11 members of a family from Bhatkal were returning home after visiting Dharmasthala and Subrahmanya. The tanker was going towards Bengaluru.

The police said as the tanker moved a few metres ahead after paying the toll, the driver of the other vehicle reportedly moved to the right and hit the tanker.

The remaining seven injured persons were admitted to private hospitals in Mangaluru.
