Nominations for

gram panchayat polls

In all, 6,092 nominations have been filed for 3,399 seats in 227 gram panchayats in Dakshina Kannada till May 16.

The last date to submit nominations is May 18. They will be scrutinised on May 19 and the last date for withdrawal is May 21. — Special Correspondent

Help for quake victims

Students, teachers, non-teaching staff and management of 19 institutions under Alva’s Education Foundation have donated Rs. 5.16 lakh for the victims of Nepal earthquake. They handed a cheque to this effect to A.B. Ibrahim, Deputy Commissioner of Dakshina Kannada on Saturday. Vivek Alva, Managing Trustee of the foundation, and Kurien Mathai, Principal Alva’s Degree College, were present.

CPI(M) protest

The Communist Party of India (Marxist) will stage a protest in front of Mangaluru City Corporation on May 22 against the Congress government, alleging that it has failed to provide good administration.

According to party councillor Dayananda Shetty, the Congress is not addressing people’s problems at the expected level. The Town Hall has been closed for repairs and the works have also come to a standstill, he said in a release. — Special Correspondent

Public hearing

A committee formed by Suvarna Arogya Suraksha Trust to inquire into two deaths following a free health check up camp at Primary Health Centre, Panaje, on March 10, will conduct a public hearing at the same PHC on May 22 from 11 a.m. Of the persons screened at the camp, 10 persons had undergone surgery. Of them, two persons from the same village had died. People have alleged that doctors of a private hospital are responsible for it. The committee will also listen to the lapses, if any, in the camp conducted, an official release said.
