The district unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has urged President Pratibha Patil to reject the proposal of the Ranganath Mishra Commission to provide reservation to the Dalits who embraced other religions.

In a memorandum addressed to Ms. Patil and submitted to Deputy Commissioner M.T. Reju, the BJP stated that the commission had been set up by the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) Government.

The proposal providing reservation to converted Dalits would affect the (non-converted) Dalits.

If the proposal was approved, it would cut into the reservation being provided to the (non-converted) Dalits. Hence, the President should reject the proposal, the memorandum said. President of the unit Udaykumar Shetty, president of the zilla panchayat Katapady Shankar Poojary, Bharatiya Janata Party Scheduled Castes Morcha president Shivaraj Mallar, and general secretary Chandra Mallar were present.
