Nishchal Bhat, Akash Shetty win 17th edition Young World quiz

Nishchal Bhat and Akash Shetty, the Class 9 students of Canara CBSE Team 2, emerged as the winners of the 17th edition of the The Hindu Young World Quiz held at Canara Girls High School’s Sudheendra auditorium on Tuesday.

Koustubh Rao and Pranav Rao from Udupi’s Vidyodaya School emerged as the runners up.

As many as 175 teams participated in the competition. Following a tough preliminary written round, two teams each from Canara CBSE and Little Rock Indian School, Brahmavar, qualified for the finals. Teams from The Vidyodaya School, Udupi, and Presidency School were the others that qualified for the final.

Third time

For Nischal Bhat, this was the third successive year he entered the finals of the Young World quiz. In 2016, he was part of the team that emerged runners-up, while in 2015, he and his another schoolmate won.

Mr. Bhat and Mr. Shetty began carefully in the first round securing 16 points. They marched ahead in the subsequent rounds earning 15 points for every right answer. They also got a bonus of 28 points for guessing an image on the screen early in the competition. They secured the top spot with 125 points at the end of the final round.

The Vidyodaya School team got 112 points, while Little Rock Indian School Team 1, comprising Raima Mahato and Ruhan Rajiv Sham, came third with 100 points. The Presidency School team, comprising Gagan and Shishir, got 78 points. They were followed by Little Rock Indian School Team 2, comprising Prabhav Shetty and Akshath Kamath, with 67 points, and the Canara CBSE Team 1, comprising Kalyan Deep Ghosh and Ziyad, with 56 points.

A.K. Vinod, Deputy General Manager, Corporation Bank and G. Ananth Prabhu, Director, Vikas Edu Solutions, presented the winning team with BSA cycles, Wildcraft bags and the Young World trophies. Director of Centre for Advanced Learining (CFAL) Vijay was present. Well-known quiz master V.V. Ramanan conducted the quiz.

The 17th edition of The Hindu Young World Quiz competition was presented by Camlin Mehanical Pencils and powered by the State Bank of India. BSA Ladybird and Hercules were the national gift sponsors. The CFAL, the BSNL and South Canara District Central Co-Operative Bank Ltd were the regional sponsors. The Grand Plaza Hotel Mangaluru was the snacks sponsor, while the Hangyo Ice Creams Pvt. Ltd. was the beverage sponsor.
