Officials of the Mangalore City Corporation demolished a structure built on the setback area of a commercial building on Kankanady-Mahaveera Circle Road.
An earthmover pulled down the structure on Wednesday amid tight police security.
Commissioner of the corporation K.N. Vijayaprakash, who supervised the operation, told presspersons that the structure had been built by one R.M. Asif.
‘Against the rules'
“Nobody is authorised to build any structure on the setback area. It is against rules and regulations. In addition, a borewell had been drilled there,” the Commissioner said.
Town Planning Officer Balakrishna Gowda said that the structure was being used as a ‘shishu vihar' (crèche) without the permission of the corporation. He said that officials had orally warned the person concerned against building the structure.
There was no resistance from anybody while demolishing the structure.
A man who introduced himself as Anil said that the building belonged to one M. Abul Hameed who lives in Dubai. He (Mr. Anil) was looking after the building for him.
Mr. Anil claimed that the civic body had not sent any notice regarding the demolition.
Mr. Gowda said that there was no need to send any written notice as the structure had been built illegally.
