A 72-year-old daily wage earner from Samayanallur attempted suicide by pouring kerosene on herself at the Collectorate here on Monday, claiming that she was yet to receive her salary for her work under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme.

The woman, who had worked for 75 days in 2018 and 46 days in 2019, said that she had received no money in her account. “Even when I worked, they asked me to place my fingerprint and took all my salary,” she said, referring to local officials.

Her attempt was stopped by police officials on the Collectorate campus.

Those in distress or having suicidal tendencies could seek help and counselling by calling State’s health helpline ‘104’ and Sneha’s suicide prevention helpline 044 24640050.
