Members of Madurai district unit of Viswa Hindu Parishad (VHP) organised a demonstration at Anna bus stand here on Wednesday to highlight the need to protect heritage structures in and around Madurai.
The members called for immediate steps to demolish all buildings that violated construction rules around the Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple and wanted the Government to give up the move to convert Yanaimalai into a sculpture park. They also wanted an immediate action to prevent the destruction and decay of cave and rock cut temples and Jain beds in Arittapatti. Ancient village temples, like the Moonusamy Temple in Pichampatti, should not be demolished in the name of removal of encroachments, they said. The demonstration was led by E. S. Ramesh Babu, treasurer of the district unit.
