Emphasis on a cross disciplinary approach towards higher education comprising inter-disciplinary subjects and other innovative courses should be given by educational institutions to fuel the minds of students, said P. Gunasekaran, Vice-Chancellor of Thiruvalluvar University, Vellore.

Mr. Gunasekaran addressed the graduating students of the Thiagarajar College at their 32{+n}{+d}annual graduation day on the college premises.

“Institutions should support such inter-disciplinary courses at the graduate level itself so that the students are exposed to a greater range of knowledge and learning. In our country, it is yet to be encouraged and financially supported and educational institutions should take the plunge,” he said.

Mr. Gunasekaran said that research activities should be promoted in colleges as well and stressed the necessity of constant learning.

As many as 666 graduates, 303 postgraduates and 80 M. Phil. scholars received their degrees during the graduation ceremony. Among them were also 30 gold medallists who were awarded for their overall performance.

Secretary of the college K. Thiagarajan told the students that their graduation was a kick-start to the life ahead of them. “You should fly in the right direction using your education as a licence and make use of opportunities in the right way,” he said.

Principal T. Rajasekar administered the formal graduation pledge during the ceremony.
