Considering the higher production of milk from milk societies, the State government should think of modernising Aavin units across Tamil Nadu, said Tamil Maanila Congress president G.K. Vasan here on Saturday.

Speaking to reporters, he said that from 23 lakh litres of milk produced per day, the procurement level had gone up to 30 lakh litres per day. Procuring and preserving higher volumes of milk would pave way for Aavin to introduce more by-products from milk as done in Karnataka.

By enhancing the efficiency of the units and modernising the plants with state-of-the-art technology, the industry could touch a new high. The farmers were in a buoyant mood and it should be tapped to the best. At a time when production had improved, the procurement level should further look upwards and not take a U-turn, he said. “We should make use of the higher production of milk from the producers,” Mr. Vasan opined, and wanted the government to create a climate which would encourage even small producers.

Though the government could come out with some reasons for not procuring higher volumes, it should not give an impression which would bring down the morale of the milk producers, he said, and hoped the situation would change for better in the coming days.

As for construction of two new bridges in the city, Mr. Vasan said that it was welcome move for the citizens. However, he said that a time frame had to be given for completion of the projects as road users should not feel the heat due to the demolition of the existing causeways.

The Madurai Corporation had proposed to demolish two old causeways and build two flyovers connecting Madurai north and Madurai south at Aruldosspuram and Thirumalairayar Padithurai. Even before the work started the DMK and other opposition parties protested the demolition move.

The TMC leader said that in public interest, the authorities should take a move, which would not affect the common man.
