19 arrested; 500 police personnel deployed

With the arrest of 19 persons and deployment of additional police personnel, an uneasy calm prevailed at Bomminaickanpatti village in Periyakulam block on Sunday after violence and arson shook the village on Saturday. The police arrested 11 persons from the Muslim community and nine persons from the Dalit community.

More than 500 police personnel including from Bodi, Cumbum, Andipatti, Chinnamanur and Periyakulam were deployed at the village.They were posted at vantage points and at the four entry points of the village.

An inspector and sufficient force were deployed at each entry point. No outsiders were allowed to enter the village. Already, many persons who were involved in the violence, have fled the village, according to the police.

More than 30 persons were injured and 50 houses ransacked in the clash between Muslims and Dalits in the village on Saturday. A mob torched two shops, a car, an autorickshaw and two two-wheelers. Another gang reportedly axed 200 standing banana plants in a farm owned by one Mohammad.

The latest clash was triggered by a dispute over the route that a funeral procession of the Dalits took.
