In separate incidents, two persons, including an octogenarian woman, complained of police excess and got admitted to Srivilliputtur Government Hospital.
In the first incident, one R. Nagarajan, 48, of Appayanaickenpatti complained that two police personnel attached to Kazhugumalai police station in Thoothukudi district assaulted him at his house under Malli police station limits on Sunday.
He claimed that the two police personnel – Head Constable Rajasekar and constable Selvam – came to his house in the early hours of Sunday. S. Mariappan, 40, of Kazhugumalai, who had lodged a complaint against Nagarajan that he had not settled bills to the tune of ₹ 40,000, came along with the police personnel.
Mariappan had supplied cement bags for consecration of a temple in Kazhugumalai. Nagarajan was in the temple renovation work committee.
The police personnel allegedly punched Nagarajan, inflicting bleeding injuries on his lips and face. He also suffered bruises on his left arm, he said. He got admitted to Srivilliputtur GH.
In the other incident, K. Velunachiyar, 80, of Watrap alleged that two police personnel from Melur in Madurai district, who came to her house in search of her grandson Rahul Srinivasan on Sunday, pushed her down.
Melur police were in search of Srinivasan in connection with a kidnap case. Velunachiyar also got admitted to the GH.
However, Madurai Superintendent of Police N. Manivannan denied the allegation. He said Rahul Srinivasan was the second accused in the case of kidnap of a Kerala-based industrialist, Jose Mathew, and his personal secretary Mathai for ransom near Melur on July 22.
“He is part of the gang led by notorious criminal Sappani Murugan. It was Srinivasan who organised the kidnap. Our men went there to get information on the whereabouts of the accused and made enquiries with the aged woman. Our men had not done anything in violation of law. The false charge against the police is only to divert the attention of the police from the crime,” he said.
Melur police have so far arrested three accused in the case.
