A woman and her paramour were arrested for the murder of a one-year-old infant on Monday.

Vadakasi, 40, who was married to 45-year-old Raju, a Tangedco employee and resident of Pazhangottai near Kazhugumalai, allegedly had an affair with 32-year-old Swaminathan of Arumuga Nagar.

Raju, who heard about their relationship, chided them. He also left their one-year-old infant in the care of his in-laws.

On Sunday, when Vadakasi went to her parents’ house, Raju asked her to bring their child home. After reaching home around 2 a.m., Raju found that his wife and child were missing.

After an anxious search in the neighbourhood, he suspected that she might have headed to Swaminthan's place. When he reached the house on his bicycle around 3 a.m. he found Swaminathan assaulting the child. On seeing him, Swaminathan and Vadakasi fled the spot along with the child, the police said.

Later in the morning, he heard that the child had been admitted to Sankarankovil Government Hospital, where the infant was declared dead.

Based on Raju's complaint, Kazhugumalai police are investigating.
