As many as 67 flood-prone areas were identified in the district and first responders appointed for these zones to carry out rescue and relief work in case of flood during the northeast monsoon, according to Collector T.G. Vinay.
Inaugurating a training session to first responders at the district swimming pool complex here on Sunday, he said that vulnerable areas were identified on the basis of previous disaster records and experience gained during flood in previous years, areas affected by flood and inundated areas during the last monsoon period.
One responder was appointed in each vulnerable spot in order to alert officials, rescue victims and help them in getting food and shelter in case of an emergency. Each responder would have his team to work in the respective areas. Identity cards were given to them.
The main objective of the training was to mould them to prepare themselves to handle tough situations and work on a war-footing in flood-affected areas.
A control room was set up to receive information and complaints from the public. The people may contact the control room through the toll-free-number 1077 to lodge complaints or pass information relating to flood to act swiftly.
A special training in rescue persons from flood and first-aid was imparted to the first respondents in the swimming pool on the district sports complex.
