The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court on Monday directed the Tiruchi SP to file a status report in a matrimonial fraud case, in which a medical practitioner was cheated by a man who impersonated as a doctor.

A Division Bench of Justices M. Sathyanarayanan and B. Pugalendhi directed the SP to file a status report and adjourned hearing till July 9. Earlier, following the direction of the court, the man was arrested by Tiruchi police. The court was hearing a public interest litigation petition filed by Parents Trust that sought regulation of matrimonial sites.

The petitioner, T. Jayanthi Rani, Managing Trustee, said that in the wake of such incidents, there was a need to control and monitor matrimonial sites. There was also a need for framing suitable guidelines to include a verification and identification mechanism.

She said that the medical practitioner had approached Parents Trust for help. The medical practitioner, a widow and mother of a minor, had uploaded her profile on a matrimonial website on the advice of her friends and relatives. A man named Ajay responded to her profile with a marriage proposal, claiming to be a doctor and a widower.

He allegedly gained her confidence and developed a relationship with her. However, after exploiting her sexually and financially, he stopped contacting her. Realising that she was cheated by the man, the woman sought the help of the trust, following which a complaint was filed with Tiruchi police.
