The 49th annual district training camp of the St. John Ambulance Brigade began here on Monday.

Divisional Railway Manager Sunil Kumar Garg inaugurated the three-day training programme in the presence of Chief Medical Superintendent Dr. G.Sahoo, and Senior Divisional Safety Officer Balachandran.

Training is organised every year to help keep the members updated about the latest skills of first-aid, a statement said. Southern Railway is one of the many brigade districts of St.John Ambulance.

Since its formation in 1956, SJAB has been constantly engaged in training employees in first-aid especially during emergency situations, providing care for the ill or injured until medical aid arrives. A total of 1,680 employees of Southern Railway are on the active rolls of the Brigade. They have rendered yeomen service during train accidents, natural calamities like earthquakes in Latur, Bhuj and during the Tsunami too, the statement added.

Besides, the members actively involve themselves in voluntary work during Kumbamela, fairs and festivals, as well as public health campaigns like pulse polio immunisation.
