The city police on Monday claimed to have cracked the case of twin blasts on two TNSTC buses reported in Arapalayam on the night of September 30, with the arrest of three persons, said to be associated with Islamiya Jananayaka Munnani.

Commissioner of Police Shailesh Kumar Yadav said that the three were arrested for their involvement in the blasts.

“Some more persons are involved in the case. The details of the motive are under investigation,” he said.

The police identified the accused as Sultan Basha, an accomplice of Al-Umma activist Imam Ali, and an accused in Imam Ali’s escape from police custody in 2002. A resident of Villapuram, he is now a State-level functionary of the IJM.

The other accused are Shubahan of Tenkasi, who is said to be an accused in a triple murder case in Tenkasi in Tirunelveli district in 2007. The third accused was identified as Ziyabuddin of South Gate in the city.

Though the city police have been questioning them for the past two days, they were formally arrested only on Monday.

Two low-intensity explosions were reported on two TNSTC buses parked on North Bank Road of the Vaigai.

The buses were parked on the road before their scheduled departure from the nearby bus stand in Arapalayam to Salem and Hosur later in the night.

However, the bus crew, who were sleeping on top of the buses, were not injured. Members of the IJM staged a road roko protesting the arrest. A total of 37 persons were taken into custody and later released.
