Restrictions imposed for the event last year to continue this time, says IGP

October 18, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:45 am IST - MADURAI/RAMANATHAPURAM:

Ahead of the annual Thevar Jayanthi scheduled for October 30, Inspector General of Police (south zone) Abhay Kumar Singh presided over a meeting attended by top officers from southern districts.

Speaking to The Hindu , the IGP said that the restrictions imposed for the event last year would continue this time. “Maintenance of law and order will be our priority on such occasions. We expect fullest cooperation from the participants. For enforcing the laws, the police had introduced a number of measures which would ensure peace before, during and after the Thevar Jayanthi,” he added.

All Collectors in the southern districts, in coordination with the police, would convene meetings and convey the rules and regulations to the leaders. For instance, the routes to be followed from the respective district to Pasumpon, to pay their respects at the Samadhi, would be intimated and there shall not be any deviation.

Similarly, details of vehicles to be used by participants must be informed to the police station concerned.

Collector K. Nanthakumar made it clear that all the 18 restrictions would be strictly enforced to ensure that the Jayanthi passed off peacefully.

Only those owned vehicles could travel in their vehicles in the permitted routes after obtaining vehicle passes from the respective offices of the Deputy Superintendents of Police (DSPs) after giving details of the vehicle owner and submitting the copies of registration certificates and driving licences, he said.

Fitting loudspeakers on private vehicles had been banned and the occupants should not travel on the rooftop, they must not carry liquor bottles, weapons and banners with provocative writings, the Collector said. They should avoid bursting crackers en-route.

The District administration would run special buses to Kamudhi on permitted routes on October 29 and 30 and villagers who seek bus services to Pasumpon should present petitions in police stations in their limits.

Leaders of registered political parties would be allotted time to pay homage and the political parties should give details and get appointments before October 26, he said.

Carrying of ‘Jothis,’ ‘mulaipari’ and milk pot processions would be restricted within one km in Pasumpon on October 29, the SP said. As the prohibitory order promulgated by the Collector was still in vogue, the ban on hired vehicles carrying volunteers would be strictly enforced from October 25 to 31, he said.

Only three vehicles would be allowed in the leader’s convoy and the vehicle owners should obtain VIP vehicle passes by October 23, he said.
