Tens of hundreds of devotees thronged the historic Adi Jagannatha Perumal temple at Tirupullani, dedicated to Lord Vishnu, near here on Sunday and witnessed the Samprokshanam performed after 17 years.
After the culmination of ‘Yagasala puja’, which began on May 31, Chief priest Padmanaba Battachar and Govindaraja Battachar from Thiruvaiyaru performed the consecration on top the main temple tower between 7 a.m. and 8 30 a.m. as devotees, drawn from various parts of the State offered prayers.
Devotees stood disappointed for more than an hour as they could not receive holy water after the consecration due to faulty sprinklers. The temple authorities had installed the sprinklers for sprinkling holy water and avoid any scramble for receiving the holy water.
The temple, built during the late 8th century with contributions from medieval Cholas and later by the Pandyas, was one of the 108 ‘divyadesams’ dedicated to Lord Vishnu, who is worshipped here as Adi Jagannatha and his consort as Padmasini. The temple was glorified in Divya Prabanda by Azhwar saints.
After the consecration, ‘Vishesha Thiruvadanam’ followed by public darshan. The five day rituals drew to a close with ‘Thirukalyanam’ in the evening. R.B.K. Rajeswari Nachiyar, hereditary trustee, V. Mahendiran, Diwan and executive secretary of Ramanathapuram Samasthanam Devasthanam, G. Swaminathan, temple executive secretary, and G Kannan, temple beshkar, were among others present.
Police made elaborate security arrangements, deploying about 1,000 policemen and home guards. Superintendent of Police Omprakash Meena supervised the security arrangements.
