In a quest to find their life partners, differently abled persons came together from various districts to attend a ‘swayamvaram’ organised by an NGO here on Sunday.

Around 50 men and women came along with their family members to the event organised by Lucia Society for the Differently Abled at Silverpuram.

Fr. Gracis Michael, director of Lucia, said the home had conducted weddings for 60 differently abled couples since 1990 after it was started in 1978. At present, it had around 80 differently abled persons.

Three couples, S. Anbarasi and C. Karuppuraja, S. Ponselvi and A. Sasikumar, M. Divya and S. Veeramani, got engaged. Meanwhile, many others, after meeting with their prospective brides and grooms, would convey their decision in about a week.

An elaborate wedding ceremony would be arranged by the home on December 13. Last year, six couples tied the knot during the ceremony. They were gifted a golden thaali and a host of household items such as cot, mattress, grinder, fridge and utensils through contributions from donors.

Meanwhile, an elderly couple, who got married decades ago in a similar event, graced the occasion and celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary.

Mumtaj, 58, of Tirunelveli and Solaiyappan, 60, of Sivakasi, who are visually impaired, tied the knot on September 15, 1994. The couple, who are involved in making woven chairs and live in their own house on Pandarampatti Road, were felicitated at the event.
