Collector K. Veera Raghava Rao, along with other officers, launched the logo of Madurai district’s ‘Swachh Survekshan Grameen 2018’ campaign that is to begin on August 1.
The Survekshan (audit) by the Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation (MDWS) intends to rank various districts in India based on a set of parameters, including solid waste management, open defecation and use of infrastructure.
A team from the Centre will visit various parts of Madurai district between August 1 and 31 to gauge the awareness levels in schools, anganwadis, primary health centres, markets and panchayats. It will also enquire about necessary improvements in each district and rank districts based on cleanliness and maintenance of infrastructure.
The Collector said that the members of various departments and local bodies had been apprised of the audit and put on alert. “On August 15, 2017, Madurai district declared itself open defecation-free. Ever since, we have been constantly monitoring various hotspots. We have built more community toilets and created awareness of hygiene in villages. We also renovated and restored toilets. The marks are based on citizen feedback and the general response to the Central government’s initiative,” he said.
