Steps to ensure water supply: Collector

Collector Sandeep Nanduri on Monday said that he had written to the Tirunelveli Collector regarding the release of an additional 50 cusecs of water for solving the drinking water problem in the Corporation.

Addressing reporters, Mr. Nanduri said that the additional quantity is expected to be released soon. The Corporation is taking steps to ensure supply of drinking water once every three days, he added.

Speaking about desilting of tanks in the district as per an announcement of the Chief Minister in the Assembly, he said that 505 tanks, including 83 minor and 422 micro-irrigation tanks in the district, would be desilted by the Rural Development department. Officials are taking steps were being taken to identify the tanks.

“At least one tank in a panchayat is to be taken up for desilting, which would be executed through the BDO. The tanks are chosen in such a way that it has not been desilted under any of the other schemes,” he added.

Meanwhile, desilting is being taken up under the kudimaramathu scheme, and other steps to improve water storage is being taken up through the Jal Sakthi Abhiyan.
