A 35-year-old patient, Mohammed Riyaz of Sri Lanka, who was suffering from thyroid cancer, was successfully operated upon in a city hospital for removal of cancerous growth. The surgery was unique as it was performed after three surgeries at a hospital in Colombo, which left residual disease with severe pain and other complications.
He approached Guru Hospital through its website and was referred to the Chief Surgical Oncologist, S.G. Balamurugan. Surgery was advised for the patient as a team of doctors found recurrent thyroid cancer with cervical lymph nodal metastasis as a result of compromised care. The patient underwent surgery — redo total thyroidectomy, bilateral neck dissection and central neck dissection — for seven hours on September 23. The patient has recovered well now, according to a press release from the hospital.
Papillary thyroid cancer is the most common one in thyroid gland and its chances of spreading are very low. If cancer is completely removed by surgery, chances of acquiring cure are nearly 100 per cent.
