Spectator injured in jallikattu dies

MADURAI

A 62-year-old man, who was injured during a jallikattu at Alanganallur near here on January 17, 2019, succumbed to the injuries at Government Rajaji Hospital here on Wednesday.

According to hospital sources, M. Maruthai Muthan alias Thavudan from Kuravankulam near Alanganallur sustained injuries on his head, chest and legs when he fell down from the gallery while watching the sport.

However, eyewitness accounts and police sources said that he fell inside a canal when he tried to escape from a charging bull that had exited the collection point.

S. Shanmugasundaram, Dean (in-charge), GRH, said that his injuries, particularly near the chest, were severe and resulted in complications in the functioning of lungs.

“He was also kept on ventilator support. We could not save him despite best efforts,” he said.

The Alanganallur police have registered a case of unnatural death.
