THOOTHUKUDI

Seeking early disbursal of the documents required for getting compensation to the family of a sailor, who died in Dubai in May last, a group of seafarers from Punnaikaayal in the district submitted a petition to Collector Sandeep Nanduri on Monday.

The petitioners, led by Sahayaraj, president of Punnaikaayal Seafarers’ Welfare Association, said sailor Antonysamy Gibson of Punnaikaayal died in harness on May 14 last when he was in Dubai and the funeral was conducted in the village on May 22.

Since the contract firm which had hired Gibson had given only the ‘death certificate’, the family could not get the compensation as the ‘death investigation report’ was yet to be handed over.

Hence, the Collector should intervene to ensure early disbursal of the documents required for getting the due compensation, the petitioners said.

‘Close liquor shops’

The Naam Thamizhar Katchi cadre, led by party’s secretary V. Velraj submitted a petition seeking closure of 50% of the liquor shops in the port town where crime rate was on the rise owing to the sale of liquor.

On their part, the CPI (M) cadre from Sivanthakulam areas submitted a petition against the opening of a liquor shop on the first street of their area. The shop should be closed immediately, they said.

‘Drain rainwater’

While the residents of Chinnakannupuram submitted a petition seeking immediate steps for draining the stagnant rainwater in their area and repairing the roads damaged by recent rains, residents of Arumuga Nagar in Kazhugumalai prayed for the draining of stagnant sewage in their area.

Traders of Authoor, led by president P. Thamizharasan, submitted a petition seeking repairing of the badly damaged road in the town.
