During checks carried out on Saturday night and Sunday morning by Static Surveillance Teams (SST) of the District Election Office, around Rs.9.6 lakh was seized from Jaihindpuram and Simmakkal areas.

According to official sources, search of a vehicle intercepted in Jaihindpuram on Saturday night by a SST of Madurai Central constituency revealed that persons were carrying Rs. 7.60 lakh. They reportedly claimed that they were agents of a beedi company collecting money from retailers.

However, the cash was seized by the officials as the persons did not have any documents to support their claim.

Another Rs.2 lakh was seized from a passenger travelling in a private bus from Chennai, which was intercepted at Simmakkal by a SST of Madurai Central constituency on Sunday morning. Officials said that the person claimed that it was to meet personal expenses and did not have any documents showing the source of the money.

Vehicle seized

A truck with the symbol of AIADMK painted on it carrying 60 refrigerators was seized by election officials in Madurai East constituency on Sunday.

The truck was reportedly carrying the goods from Tiruchi to a godown in Thirumogur here. While documents showing the legitimacy of the freight were available for 43 refrigerators, the documents were missing for the remaining 17, officials said.

Importantly, officials added that painting of party symbol or flag was prohibited when model code of conduct (MCC) is in place for Assembly elections. Hence, a police case was also registered for violation of MCC.
