A daring robbery attempt in a cooperative society near Alanganallur was thwarted by the watchman, P. Vellai, 55, and his relative V. Shanmugam, 28, past Monday midnight. However, the robbers inflicted bleeding injuries on both of them before fleeing from the scene.
The police said that both the injured had been admitted to Government Rajaji Hospital here with multiple cut injuries on their heads. They said that Mr. Vellai, who had been working as watchman of Agriculture Cooperative Credit Society on Alanganallur-Oomachikulam Road at Achampatti for the last three years, was sleeping on the society premises along with Mr. Shanmugam.
At 12.45 a.m., he heard some strange noise from the rear side of the building. When he went there, he found a few unidentified persons attempting to break open the window with crow bars. When Mr. Vellai raised an alarm, the robbers assaulted him with knives on his head. Meanwhile, Mr. Shanmugam, who got up, was also attacked.
However, faced with the unexpected resistance, the robbers gave up their plan to take away the valuables and money kept in the society building and disappeared under the cover of darkness. The police said that cash and gold worth ₹2 crore kept in a chest were intact.
