A public interest litigation petition filed before the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court on Monday sought a direction to restrain Director General of Police T.K. Rajendran from discharging his official duties till the Lok Sabha election in State.
The petitioner, K. Kathiresan of Madurai, said the DGP was holding the post because of the ruling AIADMK and if he continued to discharge his duties as DGP, a fair and free election could not be expected.
He recalled that the very appointment of Mr. Rajendran as DGP was in question and not in consonance with the landmark Prakash Singh judgement delivered by the Supreme Court. Also, the DGP figured in the gutkha scam, involving highly placed people. Even certain papers in the scam had gone missing, he said.
The Election Commission was duty bound to ensure a fair and free election in Tamil Nadu. Till the completion of the election, it would be only fair to appoint a honest, upright officer as DGP.
