MADURAI

About 20 remand prisoners staged an agitation inside Madurai Central Prison on Tuesday evening protesting against a search conducted in the cell of an accused, identified as Kuppai Kannan.

The prisoners, who climbed atop a building in Remand Prisoners Block 2, started pelting stones on New Jail Road. City police blocked traffic on the road as a precautionary measure. Following talks held by the jail authorities, including DIG (Prison) Palani and Superintendent Urmila, with the prisoners, they got down after 40 minutes of protest.

The prisoners also shouted slogans alleging that the quality of food served was not good.

However, a source in the prison said that the police recovered 10 gm of ganja from one of the five prisoners who returned to jail after being taken to a court in Manamadurai. Following this, a search was conducted in the cell of Kuppai Kannan, a murder accused. This led to the protest.
