After making a stunning performance, securing the State second rank in overall pass percentage in plus two examinations, this backward district hogged the limelight again winning the third rank in class X examinations, results of which were announced on Friday.

The district, disregarded as communally sensitive, has never been in the race for State-level rankings when it sprang a surprise last week, securing the second rank in the State in plus two examinations with an overall pass percentage of 96.77.

In a repeat performance in class X examinations, the district won the third rank in the State, with overall pass percentage of 98.16 and missed the second rank by a whisker. The district, which improved the pass percentage by 1.06% compared to last year and moved ahead from the fourth rank, missed the second rank this year by just 0.01%.

Of the total number of 17,979 students, including 9,165 girls who appeared for the examination, 17,648 came out with flying colours. As usual, girls outshone the boys, recording a pass percentage of 98.83. Of the 248 schools, 157 schools made clean sweep, recording 100% pass and they included 83 government and 29 government aided schools.

“We are immensely happy to make the achievement in the sphere of education and we will strive to emerge on top in the coming years,” Collector S. Natarajan said releasing the details of results, here on Friday. The achievement became possible thanks to the cooperation of the teachers, who conducted special classes and assessed the performance of the students by holding periodical tests, he said.

At the end of every term, the Collector reviewed the performance of the schools after separately interacting with the teachers and heads of the schools, Chief Educational Officer K. Jayakannu said.

The Collector and District Revenue Officer S. Muthumari congratulated the CEO and his colleagues D. Balasubramanian, K. Ramar and A. V. Meenakshisundaram for achieving the feat. The achievement was the parting gift for the CEO, who was retiring at the end of this month.

To improve the performance both in plus two and class X during this academic year, the district administration proposed to encourage officials at all levels in the education department with special prizes, the Collector said.
