A team of police personnel conducted a search of the Madurai Adheenam here on Tuesday in a case filed by the Vilakkuthoon police. According to police officials, the search was conducted from 11.45 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The complainant, M. Solai Kannan, Madurai district president of Hindu Makkal Katchi, alleged that Nithyananda, the junior head of the mutt, was in possession of tiger skins, elephant tusks and foreign currency when he visited the mutt on May 12. He also claimed that Nithyananda was found with an actor during the visit. This would attract provisions of the Indian Penal Code, Forest Act, Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act and Foreign Exchange Management Act, he claimed. Mr. Solai Kannan later filed a petition before the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court, seeking a direction to the police to file a criminal case against Nithyananda.
When the petition came up for hearing, the Vilakkuthoon made a submission to the court that a case had already been registered against Nithyananda. Tuesday’s search was a follow up of the case.
