A petition filed before the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court sought permission to conduct a day-long hunger strike in Madurai, requesting the Governor to give consent to the release of the seven convicts in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case.

Justice N. Anand Venkatesh directed Tallakulam police in Madurai to consider the plea and grant necessary permission for the hunger strike to be held near Goripalayam dargah on October 20. The petitioner was directed to give a fresh representation to the police in this regard.

The court said the police should impose reasonable conditions in order to ensure that the event was held peacefully without any law and order problem. T. Thileepan Senthil of Madurai had filed the petition seeking permission to conduct the hunger strike. Earlier, a similar petition was filed before the High Court Bench seeking permission for a cycle rally to be held across the State pressing for the same demand.
