A public interest litigation petition filed before Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court has sought setting up of a permanent railway gate manned by a gatekeeper at a level crossing in Cheranmahadevi in Tirunelveli district.

The petitioner, M. Ilaiyaperumal of Tirunelveli, said that people of Mela Pudukudi and Pudur used the level crossing in Cheranmahadevi. However, railway authorities were planning to construct an underbridge at the unmanned railway crossing. The main concern was the flooding of the subway. During monsoon, rainwater could stagnate and result in spread of water-borne diseases.

Hence, a permanent railway gate, manned by a gatekeeper, must be constructed there instead of the underbridge, the petitioner said.

A Division Bench of Justices K.K. Sasidharan and P.D. Audikesavalu directed notice to the Southern Railway and sought a counter from them.
