A public interest litigation petition has been filed in the Madras High Court Bench here to prevent illegal mining of sea sand, felling of trees grown to prevent natural disasters such as tsunami and hunting of peacocks around the coastal villages of Mukilankudiyiruppu, Kinnikannanvilai and Ilanthayadivilai in Kanyakumari district.
V. Ramesh, an advocate based here, had filed the PIL accusing as many as 22 individuals of indulging in the illegal activities. He sought a direction to the Centre as well as the State Government to crack down on those involved in such activities by seizing vehicles used to transport the sea sand and maintaining strict vigil on the coastline. The case is expected to be listed for hearing before a Division Bench of Justices S. Tamilvanan and V.S. Ravi on Wednesday.
