Seeking proper maintenance of a tank in their area under kudimaramathu scheme, residents of Panaiyur staged a protest at the Collectorate here on Monday.

In their petition submitted to Collector T. S. Rajasekar, they complained of encroachments of the tank. M. Rajkumar, a resident, said construction companies had been encroaching the tank and a building was also coming up. Despite many complaints to the Public Works Department, no official had taken action against the encroachers, he said.

Another resident S. P. Tavamani said sewage was also let into the tank. Nearby restaurants and hospitals were treating the tank as a garbage dump, he said.

The residents demanded proper maintenance of the tank under kudimaramathu scheme. The PWD must take action against the encroachers and ensure that availability and quality of groundwater was not affected in their area.
