In a first, a woman advocate, Senior Counsel N. Krishnaveni, was elected president of the Madurai Bench of Madras High Court Bar Association (MMBA), one of the five bar associations of the HC Bench.

Ms. Krishnaveni has been practising in the High Court Bench since its establishment in 2004. Earlier, she had served as president of the Women Advocates Association (WAA) and secretary of MMBA.

She said that her task as MMBA president would be no different and she would work with the same vigour as in her previous assignments.

The other office-bearers elected for 2019-20 were N. Ilango (general secretary); K. Gokul (vice-president) and G. Radhakrishnan (treasurer).
