Seeking to project itself as an alternative to the DMK and the AIADMK in the State, Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) will contest in the by-election to the Sankarankoil Assembly constituency.

A resolution adopted in a meeting of the general council on Friday said the party would uphold the principles of former Chief Minister C.N. Annadurai and take the message to the people.

Reiterating its stand that a separate Eelam alone would end the sufferings of the Sri Lankan Tamils, another resolution demanded a referendum on the issue in the presence of international observers.

“The community of expatriate Tamils should be allowed to participate in the referendum in the countries where they have settled.”

The party also wanted closure of Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project, saying that when developed countries such as Germany and Italy had decided to close down nuclear reactors, the decision of the Central government to install eight reactors each in Kudankulam and Kalpakkam was shocking.

A resolution against shifting of Anna Centenary Library from Kotturpuram and another for setting up Lokayukta were also adopted.
