Madurai Deputy Mayor R. Gopalakrishnan, who was elected from Alangulam (Ward 4) as Madurai Corporation councillor on an All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) ticket, submitted his resignation here on Monday.
As the AIADMK has announced Mr.Gopalakrishnan as its Madurai Lok Sabha constituency candidate, he submitted his resignation to Mayor V.V. Rajan Chellappa in the presence of Minister for Cooperation Sellur K. Raju and other party members.
Thanking Chief Minister and party supremo Jayalalithaa for having announced him as the Madurai candidate, Mr.Gopalakrishnan told The Hindu that it was a great opportunity to serve the people of Madurai.
“As mentioned in our party manifesto, the AIADMK would play a major role in the country’s development after the general elections. With the State government having implemented so many welfare schemes for the people, I see a landslide victory for the party,” he noted.
Senior party functionaries from Madurai, led by Mr.Raju, are in an upbeat mood as they had got an opportunity to show their strength in the Lok Sabha as well.
“On many occasions in the past, the Madurai seat had been allotted to our allies. But this time, we feel the high command is set to retain it,” AIADMK leaders said.
“With all the Assembly segments in the district falling in Madurai Lok Sabha constituency with us, there is no need to give the constituency to our allies, at least this time,” they noted.
