MADURAI

R. P. Ravichandran, a life convict in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, has written to Governor Banwarilal Purohit requesting him to either act on the State government’s policy decision to release the seven convicts or reveal his stand in the issue.

Currently lodged at Madurai Central Prison, Ravichandran, in his letter, said that the State government, in its policy decision taken on September 9, 2018, had recommended to the Governor to release the convicts under Article 161 of the Constitution (Power of Governor to grant pardons).

With no action taken, Ravichandran said, he had sent a requisition to the Governor on November 27, 2018, to act on the State government’s recommendation. But even eight months after the recommendation was made, the Governor had not taken a stand, he said. Now that the Lok Sabha poll in Tamil Nadu was over, there was no hurdle for the Governor to act in the issue.

He requested the Governor to act or reveal his stand in the issue within four weeks. The letter was recently forwarded to the Governor’s office by prison authorities.
