Journalists injured in freak accident

In a freak accident, three journalists who were at sitting on the footpath of Pamban road bridge and watching the sea for the movement of Cyclone Gaja, suffered injuries when two cars dashed against each other and rammed the footpath.

Police said a group of print, television and photo journalists were sitting on the footpath when the accident occurred. Three journalists – Mohan (Junior Vikatan), Rajkumar (Vendhar TV) and Rajkumar (Polymer TV) – and a police constable were injured and later treated at the government hospital in Rameswaram.

Six youth from Kerala were returning in a car after offering worship at Ramanathaswamy Temple in Rameswaram when their vehicle hit the car coming in the opposite direction from Pei Karumbu and rammedthe footpath. Those travelling in the two cars also suffered injuries and were taken to the government hospital, the police said.

Journalists said they were just discussing the poor lightings on the 2.4-km-long road bridge when the accident occurred. There were no lights on the bridge and the whole area looked pitch dark, they said. Two-wheelers of two journalists were damaged in the accident, they added.
