The two-day celebration of the International Day of the Girl Child organised by Sakthi-Vidiyal, a non-governmental organisation, concluded here on Sunday.
It witnessed enthusiastic participation of girl children in various events focussing on their emancipation. The events included treasure hunts and cat walks.
A facial display event was also organised for the participants under two categories – seniors and juniors – and the theme was ‘We are the brightness of the world’.
G. Sharmila, Project Director, Sakthi-Vidiyal, said there was a need for equal rights in all spheres for the girl child. “Girl children face discrimination at home and in school. They do not believe that they are entitled to equal opportunities,” she said.
Sakthi-Vidiyal provided opportunities for students to focus on the ways to empower themselves, she added.
Seventy-five students took part in the celebrations. R. Jayarani, one of the students, said she was once shy and was unable to express herself clearly.
“With these exercises, I have been able to break the barriers. I have also learnt to share my experiences and talk to others,” she said.
The events were followed by the valedictory function, in which a small candle lighting ceremony was held. Children and parents came together to take an oath to support and ensure rights of girl children.
