TIRUNELVELI

An Inspector Police has been placed under suspension following some charges against him.

Sources in the police said Inspector Periyasamy, when he had been posted in Palayamkottai, allegedly supported one of the warring groups of Tirunelveli CSI Diocese, where a tussle for power has been going on for the past several years between two groups. A retired senior police officer is so active in one of these groups, and the decision taken by Mr. Periyasamy reportedly hurt him.

Consequently, the retired police officer, who allegedly influenced his former colleagues, ensured the transfer of Mr. Periyasamy to some other place. However, he managed to return to Tirunelveli district again.

The sources also said Mr. Periyasamy reportedly supported a person involved in misappropriation of funds of a private trust, for which a complaint was lodged with the senior police officers.

Against this backdrop, Mr. Periyasamy, who was attached to the Serious Crime unit, was placed under suspension, the police sources said.

When the police were struggling to crack the murder of former Mayor Uma Maheshwari, her husband Muruga Sanakaran and housemaid Mari, it was Mr. Periyasamy-led special team that cracked the case and arrested Karthik Raja alias Karthikeyan, son of DMK office-bearer Seeniammal.
