Students of TVS Community College showcased their projects in an exhibition on their college premises in Iravathanallur here on Friday.

The two-day expo was inaugurated by Additional Collector and District Rural Development Agency (DRDA) Project Officer Rohini Ramdas. Students doing automobile mechanism, electrical and plumbing, office management and accounting, computer applications and in other departments had set up stalls, showcasing working models and other innovations.

Students of office management and accounting displayed working models of solar lighting rainwater harvesting systems. “We also demonstrated how to effectively use grey water after recycling to maintain kitchen gardens,” said K. Meenakshi, a student. Handmade purses, pouches, frocks for children and aprons made by tailoring students were on display and sale.

Speaking about an air-filling system for two-wheelers, Principal Alex Michael Rajan said that the students were encouraged to come up with simple but useful innovations.

S. Malaisamy, a student, explained the working of a suction and drawing system which could be operated in the agricultural fields with the help of a TVS 50 moped.

Among the highlights of the expo was an innovation titled ‘AC for Poor,’ conceived by students of refrigeration and air-conditioning. They said that the appliance was made using parts of an air cooler and a refrigerator. It would consume less than a unit of electricity in a day and it could be used in a small cabin or room.

K. Srinivasan, Assistant Project Director, said that while the students were usually asked to submit final-year projects, this was the first time that the college had organised the expo to showcase their works.
