Over three hundred members of Painkulam Panchayat-Level Federation (PLF) staged a road blockade in Kattuvilai near Pudukkadai protesting against illegal sale of liquor allegedly brought from TASMAC shops here on Wednesday.

N. Vijayarani, treasurer of the PLF, who led the protest, told The Hindu that T. Mani (50) of the same area was selling liquor illegally in a coconut grove near the Melakulam pond, where the women bath and wash clothes.

The sale was in vogue for the last three months, i.e. immediately after the closure of three shops in Pudukkadai town.

As per the order of the Supreme Court, the three shops functioning in Pudukkadai town were closed by authorities, but they are unable to open a new shop in lieu of the closed ones due to resistance from the public.

“Complaints to the police of no avail, hence, the members were forced to block road’’, Ms. Vijayarani said.

Pudukkadai police pacified the agitators. Following this, women dispersed.

Immediately after this, T. Mani was arrested, produced before the Kuzhithurai Judicial Magistrate II and remanded in judicial custody. A case has been registered.
