Velammal Healthcare Innovation Award function would be held on November 15 and 16 at Ida Scudder hall here, said Venkatesh Phanidhar, Velammal Hospital Chief Executive Officer.

Addressing a press meet here on Tuesday, he said Telangana Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan was expected to distribute the awards on November 16.

He said that award would help find a way to bridge the gap between innovation, technology and skill development.

“The aim is to identify and celebrate innovations in healthcare and recognise innovators in the field of medicine. Anyone who can deliver more efficient, affordable and improved healthcare would be awarded,” he said.

The CEO said that awards had been divided into three categories — medical and surgical innovators, digital innovators and diagnostic innovators.

Citing examples of various interesting experiments like pocket ECG machines, Mr. Phanidhar said that low-cost procedures had changed the way medicine was accessed around the world.

On the first day, 66 shortlisted innovators from around the country would present their models to a nine-member panel of experts who would judge them on reliability, the way technology would transform lives, how quickly it could be produced and what its scope would be.

“Since there is a demand and supply gap in the healthcare industry in India with skewed doctor-patient ratio and low patient-bed ratio to cite a few, innovations have become an essential part of the world of healthcare,” he said.

The winners of the award in each category will receive ₹ 2 lakh each.
